Rolling Stone’s 2004 Article “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”

May 29, 2010 in Random

Thought a bunch of you didn’t even know this list existed, wanted to enlighten the ignorant masses!

The all-business, no-nonsense cover makes me love this article even more.

I usually don’t care about lists like this, but….
GUESS WHO MADE TOP 10, BABY?
My boy Kurt Cobain, that’s who! Smell’s Like Teen Spirit is number NINE of the list and it feels GOOD.

You can check out the full list if you care that much,
I’m allowed to post about whatever I want to so this post will be all about my personal opinions
(fails and wins and what not).
P.S. I do not like the Beatles, at all.

- Like a Rolling Stone, Bob Dylan is at the top of the list. No real arguments can be made here.
-R E S P E C T, find out what it means to…be #5 on the list, I’ll bet it’s cool!
-Question, how is Stairway to Heaven 31…how did Led Zepplin not kick some Beatle ass?
-FREE BIRD IS UNDERNEATH HEY YA! ?
-179. Love Will Tear Us Apart, Joy Division – although I understand, I am still upset.
-Anarchy in the U.K. wasn’t top 20? Whatever.
-But, seeing this ruled: (this kind of makes up for Stairway to Heaven drama..)
74. Superstition, Stevie Wonder
75. Whole Lotta Love, Led Zeppelin
76. Strawberry Fields Forever,The Beatles
-
Saw #146…but, it wasn’t a rock. It was a Rock Lobster!
-Flava Flav
made it too. 160. Bring the Noise, Public Enemy
-WHY ISN’T STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON ON THIS LIST?
-166. Lose Yourself , Eminem. You took one from Lennon!
-167. Let’s Get It On, Marvin Gaye
-The Law didn’t beat you to #175, Bobby Fuller Four! (You won this time.)
-And at 189 we’re ah-ah-ah-ahh Stayin’ Alive.
-225. Hoochie Coochie Man, Muddy Waters (????)
-Sexual Healing, only 231?! I don’t even…
-Rocket Man burning up his fuse here aloneeee at the 242 spot.
-290. Stan, Eminem featuring Dido, I love Eminem but…what? THIS song?
-One Way or Another, this song is gonna just barely make the top 300.
-301. Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?, Rod Stewart . . . uhhhh
-#305, Say It Loud — I’m Black and Proud!  ALWAYS.
-314. Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd I LOL’d because it’s the pi spot.
-The fact that La Bamba was one of the 500 is just a mystery to me.
-California Love, Dr. Dre and 2Pac is here but no NWA?! Again, I do not understand! (I do not dispute that California Love is a top 500 song)
-Bitter Sweet Symphony, The Verve…I love this song, it’s cool to see one-hit wonders can make it to 382.
-Holdddd me closer Tiny Dancer, this song is on 387′s highhhway.
- 398. Sweet Home Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd
399. Enter Sandman, Metallica
wait, wait, wait…this can not be right, that gap should be MUCH larger.
-Nevermind! NWA made it! Fuck tha Police = 417!
-Come As You Are only being 445 upsets me. BUT YOU ALREADY GOT YOURS LENNON. HAHA.
-477. Super Freak, Rick James; OH THANK GOD that we recognized this song. I was seriously worried…
-One song by The Cure? Only ONE song? And it was Just Like Heaven? Whatever.
-WEEZER, IT MAY HAVE BEEN BUDDY HOLLY BUT YOU MADE IT!
-If the #500 pick does not piss you off, kill yourself.
Why in the hell is More Than a Feeling the LAST song on the list?
Seriously? I do not understand this logic.

Way to FAIL more than anything else Rolling Stone song judges.

Eminem “Not Afraid” Single Review

April 30, 2010 in Music, Singles RealViews

This track is actually quite uplifting, it all hits a positive note – from the perfect beat choice to the lyrics and how he does that almost singing throughout the entire track (I really love it when he does that). It has a solid chorus and three amazing verses. He took this song home, just sayin’.

This is what I wanted Relapse to sound like, and he recognizes that.
In ‘Not Afraid’, he apologizes for Relapse and admits that it was “Ehh..” because it was.
Relapse was such a let down.
Which makes it extra cool that he says:

“And to the fans, I’ll never let you down again, I’m back
I promise to never go back on that promise.”

I’m so excited to hear what he can come up with when he’s not on drugs! You have no idea. I love Marshall Mathers III so much, I’m so proud that he’s clean now. How do I know he’s clean? He talks about it in the song.

“Time to put my life back together right now
It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me
Admittedly i probably did it subliminally for you
So I could come back a brand new me”

I think this track was Eminem’s way of telling us, “Hey, I know that I had a lot of fucked up shit going on before, but I’m a new person now and I’m not afraid. Love it or hate it, this is what I want.” And I’m honestly excited about it.

Like Jon said, “If Recovery is just like “Not Afraid”, it’s going to be a good summer.”

Rihanna “Rude Boy” Single Review

March 19, 2010 in Music, Singles RealViews

This review is long overdue. I can not stand Rihanna but, man, do I love this song!

This track is so catchy – it’s too catchy. The beat is amazing. Her vocals sound really good. Congrats, studio guys(I’ve heard Rihanna live and it is NOT pretty). In certain parts, her voice does this sexy little almost-squeak thing. I actually enjoy all the repetitiveness (don’t even get me started on the video, which I am in extreme love with). The lyrics are so raunchy. For those of you who haven’t heard it yet, here are some examples:
“Relax; let me do it how I wanna . If you got it I need it and I’ma put it down. Buckle up; I’ma give it to ya stronger. Heads up; we could go a little longer”
“I like the way you touch me there. I like the way you pull my hair”
I’m just sayin’…girl is definitely lettin’ you know what’s up.

GIVE IT TO ME BABY LIKE BOOM, BOOM, BOOM.

Against Me! “White Crosses” Album Review

March 18, 2010 in Album RealViews, Music

Alright, Against Me! fans, this isn’t New Wave, but it’s not Vivida Vis either. It’s different from their other records, but do Tom Gabel a solid and give this album a chance at love! If Flava Flav and Brett Michaels can find love multiple times, you can give White Crosses the time it needs to 100% grow on you. They still sound like Against Me! despite not repeating the sound from all of their other albums. I’ll defend Tom Gabel to the ends of this earth, but I’ll let my bias aside and judge each track with precision so you can make the decision on whether (ha ha!) you’ll give it a chance or not.

01. White Crosses This one reminds me of old Green Day, with the reverb on the vocals. The chorus has such a catchy melody and I love the rhythm of this track. The lyrics are creative. It’s named after drugs, so of course there is a reference to amphetamines for those of you who enjoy songs that have to do with drugs. I really enjoy the sort of anti-religion feel it gives off. ” I’ll make my way back home to you, head north on San Marco Avenue. White crosses on the church lawn, I want to smash them all. I want to smash them all”

GRADE: 85

02. I Was a Teenage Anarchist Of course, what would an Against Me! album be without a song about being an anarchist. I don’t mind the repetitiveness in the albums. Nothing about it stands out to me really. You can’t win them all. There’s nothing wrong with it, I’m just not blown away.  But I do love how you can tell it’s straight from Tom’s heart. He’s telling a story with this track and it’s nice. “Do you remember when you were young and you wanted to set the world on fire?”

GRADE: 65

03. Because of the Shame It’s a tricky song. It starts out with happy back vocals singing with an enticing guitar but once you really get into the song, you realize it’s about an old really close girlfriend dying. It’s an adorable story, but it is incredibly sad. If you’ve been through the death of a loved one, no matter the situation, this song will most likely get to you. “I’m not sure what I meant to you then, so I’m not sure what I owe you now. But if something I said hurt you I swear it was not my intention. With your name tattoo’d into my skin. Because of the shame I associate with vulnerability I am numbing myself completely.”

GRADE: 75

04. Suffocation Definitely a contender for my favorite track on the album. It has my favorite intro and it’s extremely conceptual. Against Me! does a lot of songs where the chorus is just a line repeated – it’s rarely annoying. It’s always to make a point stand out and this song is no different. It shows a lot of what our lives have come down to in America. I appreciate the honesty.  I love the significance of the one guitar riff ( if you listen to the song you’ll know what I’m talking about). “Homosexual sons of unfulfilled fathers. Divorced from reality, free and young.”

GRADE: 94

05. We’re Breaking Up This song gets really confusing at the end. Is it a break up song or not? I have no idea. I like to ignore the last few lines and use it as a seemingly sweet way to break up with a person you’ve been with for a long time. The piano gives the song a more ‘love song’ feel, which is certainly different for Against Me!  It’s definitely not my favorite on the record and I could’ve done without it. “This is the only voice I know. These are the only words I have. This is the only way I know how to say, we’re not in love anymore”

GRADE: 64

06. High Pressure Low I love the flow of this track. Tom has such a cool way of singing. It’s a whole song about world-wide struggles in the 1960′s, which is really cool. If you don’t get the lyrics, don’t be afraid to google the 60′s so you can better understand the song – you won’t regret it. It’s a sweet track and a history lesson all in one! Who could ask for more? ”There’s just no future left for us to dream of, living in an era of instability.”

GRADE: 95

07. Ache With Me Let me start with this – I LOVE THIS TRACK. The use of acoustic guitar was SUCH a good idea. It really pulls the song together. It’s quite a pretty song. It’s about having all sorts of hopes and dreams when you’re young, and as you get older, you get to a place where you can’t just spend all of your time chasing them and you become cynical about those dreams. You begin to resent everything you wanted but never got. Does that make sense? Just listen to the song. “Do you share the same sense of defeat? Have you realized all the things you’ll never be?”

GRADE: 95

08. Spanish Moss Not sure what the significance of looking into Spanish moss is, but it looks like this.  I guess since it grows in Florida and the band is based in Florida, they use it as, like, a memory sparking figure. There are very good uses of  ‘whoa’s and ‘aye-aye-aye’s’. I’m a big fan of the ‘whoa’s’. Just sayin’. The lyrics are positive and it’s always nice to have a positive track every now and then. “Everything we’ve said and done, can be so easily forgotten. You can always change who you are.”

 GRADE: 84

09. Rapid Decompression I always hate short song because they always make me upset. I wanted this track to have at least one more verse. Tom is so insightful and I love his clever lyrics. I had a hard time picking out the one line I liked best. This is definitely a crack on our society, and a good one at that. I do not approve of how repetitive the ending is. I wanted so much mooooore. But the song brings a lot of ‘AMEN’s’ out of me – yeah, I hate everyone. ”How can you expect from someone what you won’t do yourself?”

GRADE: 83

10. Bamboo Bones I hope you read all the way to this track’s review because it is, hand’s down, the best track on the album! It has such a killer message, it has melody, a catchy-memorable-get-stuck-in-your-head-all-day-and-have-you-singing-along chorus. The drums are fantastic – you go new Warren Oakes! I’m awkwardly obsessed with this song. Get on my bandwagon. ”What god doesn’t give to you, you’ve got to go and get for yourself.”

GRADE: 94

I’d say it was a pretty solid album. I laughed, I cried, I danced a little bit. Okay I didn’t really dance, but if I wasn’t so lazy and if my bed wasn’t so comfortable I would have. I was really excited that this album leaked so early. I could NOT wait for it to come out in July but I’ll still buy the hard  copy of the album. And, to be honest, I don’t usually buy albums.

La Dispute/Native/Berkeley to DC/ANCHORS Show Review

March 17, 2010 in Music

This will not be a very good review, I don’t have anyone to hate on. I hate that.

I was taken to the show by the very person who made it all happen, meaning I was very privileged that I got to meet the members of all of the bands except a few from B2DC and the guys from Native. They didn’t come to IHOP with us and I didn’t buy any of them Sonic. Oh, well.
Native and La Dispute played on the floor, which means that there was no physical barrior whatsoever between you and the very bands you adore. Native kept telling us to get as close to them as we wanted to be. La Dispute just asked that we were mindful of the people around us and of the people with instuments. Ha.
B2DC- I hope you, somehow or another, make it as far as you want to go. You’re a spectacular band.
ANCHORS- I was so bummed that I only got to go to your last show. Collin, you’re welcome for the burrito. No you don’t have to pay me back but, yes, you have to continue to hang out with me…sorry. You are an amazing frontman and I don’t care what anybody says about you.
Native- the super cute guitarist kicked Nick (the person who took me to the show and hung out with me for a good ten hours) in the chest during the first song was an awesome moment. They played a hell of a setlist even though it was only about 5 songs long. If you don’t listen to Native, fuck you.
La Dispute- SWEETEST GROUP OF DUDES I’VE EVER MET. Honestly. Everything everyone says about them is true. When they played “Such Small Hands”, all of us went crazy. I loved that Jordan played without shoes on, even though I’m sure his feet got stepped on about a million times. Also, thanks, Jordan, for craftily moving your cigarette so you didn’t set my hair on fire when I hugged you after we left IHOP. And Vass, I don’t care what you think about Peter Parker – he will never be cooler than Batman. I’m sorry.

I, of course, BOUGHT a hoodie from La Dispute to help them pay for gas and food as they tour the country.

The guys who work at Bricktown Live! were awesome.
Nick Hampson rules the hardest out of anyone I know (except Paul Villanueva – you know he’s #1).

I don’t know if I’m supposed to but…since it was a pretty sick show,

Four Year Strong “Wasting Time (Eternal Summer)” Single Review

March 15, 2010 in Singles RealViews

Holy Christ, that’s a long title for a post…my bad.

I love Four Year Strong and I’m going to get the album to review it in its entirety.
Just give me a couple of days – I’ve got a bad case of lazy.

This will be my first single review so be prepared for raw, inexperienced aweseomeness!

I think everything is great with this song. The drums and guitar are in complete balance with the vocals.
You can’t deny how catchy it is.
It comes in with a few seconds of guitar that turns into guitar and drums and then into “Wasting time, all along you’ve just been wasting mine.”
This is a close knit band, and this single alone let’s you hear it. From the exact harmony of the instruments to the fantastic use of backing vocals.
The lyrics rule, I can’t stop singing along with it, and I’ve had it on repeat for a couple of days now.
It has an awesome opening, backing vocals, a catchy-but-not-cliche chorus, a breakdown AND an outro. Is that not the mathematical formula for a perfect song?
And the quality is crystal clear. I’m in love.

even cool black kids enjoy the song
